Medical Certificates
A medical certificate (“medical”) is a statement from an approved medical doctor that you satisfy the health requirements to operate an aircraft in flight. You are “fit to fly”. All depending on the country and regulations they come in two to three different classes. Common for all medicals are they have to be renewed every so often depending on class and age group of the holder.
The lowest class is intended for private pilots flying for leisure. This medical certificate is less expensive to obtain, has lower medical requirements and does not have to be renewed as often (normally they last for 3 years to 60 months in the youngest age group). One can also be obtained with limitations if you have health problems like impaired hearing, color blindness or missing limbs.
Moving up in class the health requirements are higher and the duration of the certificate shorter. This medical certificate is intended for commercial pilots operating aircrafts for compensation or hire and is a bit more expensive then the lower class(es). One can be obtained with vision impairment as long as it is corrective with spectacles. This will come as a limitation on your medical certificate the same way it may on a driving license.
JAA (Europe) medical certificates
The JAA medical is issued in two classes; class 2 for recreational flying and class 1 for commercial pilots flying for compensation or hire.
FAA (United States) medical certificates
The FAA medical is issued in three classes; class 3 for recreational flying, class 2 for commercial pilots operating for compensation or hire and class 1 for airline transport pilots acting as pilot in command in multi crew operations (ex. a captain on an airliner)
